The rules we both agree to

Plain language, no traps. This page sets out what you can expect from SaltCityConnect, what we ask of you in return, and exactly how your information is handled.

Who we are & what this covers

SaltCityConnect is a community platform for South-East Nigeria and beyond. We bring together local news and gists, a marketplace, verified service providers, job and gig opportunities, community events, vote cards, and a channel to report cases of public concern.

By browsing the site or creating an account, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree with them, please don't use the platform. Where we say "we" or "us" we mean SaltCityConnect; "you" means anyone using it, with or without an account.

02

Your account

Some things — posting a listing, adding an opportunity, leaving a review, creating a vote card — need an account. Creating one is free.

  • You must be at least 18, or have a parent or guardian's consent.
  • Give a real, working email address. It is how we reach you about your posts and how you recover access if you forget your password.
  • Keep your password to yourself. You're responsible for activity under your account. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got in.
  • One person, one account. Don't impersonate anyone or pretend to represent a business you have no authority over.

We store your password as a one-way hash — not as text. Nobody at SaltCityConnect, including us, can read it or tell you what it is.

03

What you post

You keep ownership of everything you post. By posting it here you give us permission to display, store and share it on the platform so that it reaches the people it's meant for. That permission ends when you delete the content, except where we must keep a copy to meet a legal obligation.

You must not post

  • Anything false, misleading, or designed to defraud — including fake listings, fake job offers, or requests for "processing fees".
  • Content that is unlawful, hateful, threatening, or that harasses or endangers anyone.
  • Someone else's work, photos, or brand without their permission.
  • Another person's private information without their consent.
  • Adult content, weapons, illegal drugs, stolen goods, counterfeits, or anything else prohibited under Nigerian law.
  • Spam, bulk repostings, or automated scraping of the platform.

Everything is reviewed before it goes live. Listings, opportunities, events, provider profiles, gists, vote cards and reported cases all sit in a moderation queue first. We may approve, reject, pause or remove any submission, and we don't have to explain every decision — though we'll usually tell you why.

04

Marketplace, Providers & Opportunities

This is the part to read carefully.

We are an introduction platform, not a party to your deal. SaltCityConnect does not sell the items listed, does not employ the providers, does not offer the jobs, and does not handle payments between you and anyone else. Any agreement you reach is strictly between you and the other person.

Protect yourself

  • Meet in a public place and inspect goods before you pay.
  • Never send money in advance to someone you haven't verified — especially for a job. A genuine employer does not charge you to be hired.
  • Be wary of prices far below the market, or pressure to move the conversation off-platform and pay immediately.
  • Check a provider's reviews and rating, and ask for proof of past work.

Reviews and ratings are the opinions of the members who wrote them. We don't verify every claim in a listing or profile, and a listing appearing here is not an endorsement or a guarantee of quality, safety, or legality.

05

Reporting a case

The case reporting channel exists so community concerns can be raised safely. Reports are anonymous: we do not ask for your name, email, or phone number, and we deliberately do not store anything linking a report back to you.

You receive a reference code when you submit. Save it — because the report is anonymous, that code is the only way to refer to your case later, and we cannot look it up for you from your identity.

Please don't misuse this channel. Knowingly false or malicious reports may be removed, and serious abuse may be referred to the appropriate authorities.

06

Gists & Vote Cards

Gists are posted anonymously under a randomly generated alias — even if you're signed in, your identity is deliberately detached from the post. Vote cards let the community weigh in on a question with four options.

Anonymity is not a shield for harm. Gists that identify private individuals, spread defamatory claims, or target anyone are removed. Voting is limited to one response per person per card; attempting to manipulate results may cost you your access.

07

Suspension & removal

We may pause, restrict or close an account, and remove any content, where we reasonably believe these Terms have been broken, where someone is at risk, or where the law requires it. Where it's fair to do so we'll give you notice and a chance to respond — but serious cases (fraud, threats, child safety) may act immediately.

You can close your account whenever you like by contacting us. Some content you posted publicly may remain visible where others have interacted with it, unless you ask us to remove it.

08

Availability & liability

We work hard to keep the platform running, but we provide it "as is". We can't promise it will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free, and we may change or withdraw features.

To the fullest extent Nigerian law allows, SaltCityConnect is not liable for losses arising from a transaction between members, from content posted by members, or from your reliance on information found on the platform. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

09

Changes & governing law

We may update these Terms as the platform grows. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and significant changes will be flagged on the site. Continuing to use the platform after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the Nigerian courts have jurisdiction over any dispute. We'd much rather sort things out directly first — please talk to us.

01

Our approach

We collect as little as the platform needs to work, and we don't sell it. This policy explains exactly what we hold, why we hold it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

It is written to align with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA). For the data described here, SaltCityConnect is the data controller.

02

What we collect

Here is the complete picture — this is genuinely all of it.

DataWhenWhy
Email addressAccount sign-upTo identify your account, send you notifications about your posts, and let you reset your password
PasswordAccount sign-upStored only as a one-way hash so we can verify sign-in without ever knowing the password
Display nameOptional, at sign-upShown alongside things you post; defaults to the part of your email before the @
Content you postWhen you submitListings, provider profiles, opportunities, events, gists, vote cards, comments and reviews — so they can be shown on the platform
Contact details in a listingWhen you postYour WhatsApp number, email or link, so buyers and applicants can reach you. Shown publicly by your choice
Photos & videosWhen you uploadDisplayed with your listing, profile, event or case report
View countsAutomaticallyA one-per-person count so posters can see reach. For signed-out visitors this uses a short technical fingerprint, not an identity

Case reports are anonymous by design. We do not collect a name, email or phone number with a report, and we hold nothing that links one back to you.

03

Cookies

We use three, and none of them are for advertising or cross-site tracking.

CookiePurposeLasts
konet_rememberKeeps you signed in if you choose "remember me". Holds a random token, never your password30 days
konet_emailPre-fills your email on the sign-in form so you don't retype it30 days
konetng-themeRemembers whether you prefer light or dark modeUntil cleared

Your browser also holds a standard session cookie while you're signed in. You can clear any of these at any time in your browser settings — you'll simply be signed out and your theme choice reset.

04

How we use it & who sees it

  • To run the platform — showing your posts, letting people contact you, keeping you signed in.
  • To moderate — reviewing submissions before they go live and acting on ones that break the rules.
  • To email you about your own activity: a submission received, approved, rejected, or a password reset you asked for.
  • To keep things safe — investigating fraud, abuse and security problems.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising on it. It is shared only with:

  • Other members — but only what you deliberately publish: your listing, your display name, and the contact method you chose to show.
  • Our hosting and email providers, purely so the site loads and messages reach you.
  • Authorities, where we're legally required to, or where someone is in danger.
05

Your rights

Under the NDPA you can ask us to:

  • Show you the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct anything inaccurate — you can edit most of it yourself.
  • Delete your account and personal data, subject to anything we must keep by law.
  • Restrict or object to a particular use of your data.
  • Withdraw consent where our use of the data rests on it.

Email privacy@saltcityconnect.com.ng and we'll respond within 30 days. If you're not satisfied, you may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

06

Security & retention

  • Passwords are stored as one-way hashes and are never recoverable in readable form.
  • "Remember me" and password-reset links use split tokens — the database stores only a hash, so a stolen database cannot be used to sign in as you.
  • Password reset links expire after one hour and work only once.
  • Changing your password signs you out everywhere else.

We keep account data while your account is open. Posts stay until you or we remove them. Anonymous case reports are kept for moderation and record-keeping, and contain nothing that identifies the reporter.

No system is perfectly secure. We take protecting your data seriously, but we can't guarantee absolute security — please use a strong, unique password.

07

Children

This platform is not intended for children under 18. We don't knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.

08

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data we'll update this page and move the "last updated" date. Material changes will be announced on the site. Please check back occasionally.
